May in My Garden

         Late may has finally brought some warm sunshine to my yard, and here are a few photos I want to share with you. The first photo is a picture of a burning bush shrub, with it's tiny yellow flowers. We usually only see photos of these plants in the fall with their bright red foilage, but they look pretty now too. Next are some feverfew leaves taken after some rain. This plant seeds itself quite aggressively, so I'm not sure if it is a blessing or a curse. Then there's my bleeding heart, new allium that came in a mix (so I don't know the name) and Sicilian honey garlic. This one really needed to be staked, but it's a new one to me so they are flopping all over. Then my new painted daisy plant, one of the few tulips the deer didn't eat, and spiraea buds and leaves.
    I decided to do a foliage container for my patio, so I bought some ornamental sweet potato vines for it. This is the first time I have grown them so I was very surprised to find this flower on one of the plants a week later. I couldn't resist the pink and white verbena, so I cheated on the all foliage container and added this in to the mix.
     I found a cool new plant in the nursery that I have never seen or heard of before, with giant sized pink blooms, almost like fuchsias on steroids. Have any of you ever grown one?

Still Blooming

     September is one of my favorite times of the year and while there are a lot less flowers blooming in my yard, I still found quite a few. The dahlias and zinnias are especially blooming well now. I decided to dig up my beloved Hansa roses, which makes me a little sad. The leaves have been plagued with a mysterious problem for three years in a row, and this year they had black-spot as well so they were looking less than lovely, to say the least. They had also outgrown their space. I am trying to save a small section of it that looked healthy and will see if that carries over the leaf problem or not.

     Last year I grew two tomato plants from seed that I had saved from store bought grape tomatoes, and they all grew and tasted like the original tomatoes. Since I still had a few seeds left, I grew them again this year. While one of the plants produced grape tomatoes, the other one produced larger tomatoes. They are pretty tasteless so I am saving them for recipes instead of fresh eating. I knew that I was taking a chance on that hybrid seed coming true but it is fun to experiment.

June Blooms

Hello fellow gardeners! We've had an unusually dry June, with several temperature records broken. Other than a few poor seedlings that I forgot to water (oops!) and my sad looking peas that aren't enjoying the heat, my garden seems to be happy. I worked on my fairy garden and added the accessories my daughter bought me along with some blue rocks for the creek. I still want to add a little patio but the pebble one will do for now. Here are a few of my favorites this month.

June Blooms and a Rock Family

    June is a busy month in the garden, with the weeds trying to keep up with the flowers. At least I finally know the name of my enemy now, the dreaded pearlwort! I'll have to tackle it further in the fall, once my perennials have died down. Here are some of my June blooms, plus a couple of photos from the cheery chickadees nesting in my yard.
